Native to Central and South America, Bloodwood can range from a burnt orange to a deep red color. It has a pleasant smell and is quite dense. Is also has an extremely consistent color and grain. The chatoyance, or shimmer, is, quite frankly, amazing. It’s also one of the heaviest woods we use, making for an excellent set of dice. Our customers tend to agree as bloodwood is one of our top three best selling woods and it is definitely a favorite in the Artisan Dice shop.
It is exceedingly rare to find any milled bloodwood stock that still contains any sapwood, as the wood is prized for it’s blood red heart wood, and being a larger tree, the still living exterior ring of sapwood makes up a very small proportion of the overall trunk So you can imagine my surprise when we removed the wax from this billet to see the creamy colored sap wood so rarely seen in bloodwood. Out of the thousands of bloodwood dice we have made these handful of dice are all we have ever seen with the pale sapwood contrasting the vivid blood red of the heartwood. We had enough material to squeeze out 2 polyhedral sets and pair of d20s.
