So after making a metric ton of Scribes for our Kickstarter backers, we’ve been looking for a way to upgrade our Scribe to be a bit more rugged, as the standard click pencil lead breaks easily. Enter the Scholar. In the scholar we use a much nicer Parker style pen mechanism along with a 2mm artist style pencil lead. Why 2mm? Simply put it is the finest style pencil in the world as it strikes the perfect balance between precision and strength. During my nearly decade long collegiate stint as an art student. I fell in love with 2mm lead holders as they can hold one of 20 different types of artist grade leads like these. A So I was more than ecstatic to find a hardware set that used my favorite leads :). These kinds of pencils are great for sketching and graphite work and we include 2B lead which is a good all around hardness. This makes for an excellent gaming pencil for marking on character sheets or keeping track of initiative thanks to the strong 2mm lead. Add in the Parker style roller ball, which is one of the smoothest roller balls on the market, and you have a very fine writing set. As with everything we make the Scholar will arrive in a swanky wooden box.
These particular Scholar sets were crafted from Soap Stone, which combined with the Scholar’s larger diameter (just under .5″) makes for a nice hefty writing instrument. The Soap Stone used in these sets is Architectural Grade Soap Stone quarried in Brazil, and is most often used in counter tops, sculptures, tile floors, and fireplaces. Thanks to it’s lower talc content it’s much more durable that artist’s grade stone, though it is correspondingly more difficult to work.
