It’s actually called Cedrela and it’s really a Mahogany from South/Central America masquerading as a Cedar from Spain.     Avodire, referred to as Blond Mahogany, is native to Africa where it is grown near lakes, streams, and other bodies of water. Avodire is one of the most beautiful of all blonde woods, a rare wood that has many of the same qualities of mahogany. The light-colored heartwood will darken to a golden color when cut. There is minimal difference in color between sapwood and heartwood. Avodire is often highly figured and, when polished, has a lustrous surface similar to Mahogany.

Honduran Mahogany was widely exploited for its shimmering beauty and put on the CITES list and thus limiting its international export to certified sustainable resources.  As a result Honduran Mahogany is now grown on many plantations throughout Central America.

    African Mahogany comes from the Khaya, a tree native to tropical Africa and Madagascar. They average from 100 to 115 feet tall, with some trees as tall as 150 feet. Its bark is used to treat disease and it even feeds some livestock in West Africa. Its oily seeds has some similar uses as well. African Mahogany is prized for its beauty all over and has been used for everything imaginable; this made African Mahogany an easy choice when it came to dice. The wood ranges from ranges from pale pink to deep reddish brown and tends to get darker with age.
