Long before inspiring these luxury tabletop treasures, stained glass was meticulously crafted to evoke the divine. While the ancient Romans were the first to figure out how to cast large glass slabs for window openings, by the 7th century we find the earliest documented use of colored, transparent window glass appearing in monastic spaces. But Abbot Suger would evolve the medium into a monumental transcendent art form the mid-12th century. Abbot Suger of the Basilica of Saint-Denis fundamentally revolutionized architecture by introducing massive, vibrant windows. He coined the term lux nova this filtered illumination aka a “heavenly light” that would serve as a physical, radiant manifestation of God that would go on to define the greatest cathedrals between 1150 and 1500 during Europe’s High Middle Ages.
This Stained Glass Marquetry Set bridges nearly two millennia of inspired artistic endeavors by translating the ethereal play of medieval cathedral light into the tactile warmth of exotic hardwoods. In medieval architecture, master craftsmen used dark, rigid lead cames and stone tracery to structurally frame vibrant, fragile shards of colored glass. We have replicated this exacting geometric discipline on a miniature scale.
The solid Maple body of each die serves as the fram of each die. Precision pockets are painstakingly placed on every face. Those pockets contain the hand positioned fragments of Padauk, Purpleheart, Bubinga, Shedua, Canary, Bloodwood, and Bolivian Rosewood.
Just as medieval windows required an exact fit to withstand the elements, each shard of exotic wood must be precisely positioned to create a seamless, flush finish.
Instead of filtering sunlight, these masterworks capture the ambient light of your gaming table, reflecting a rich, multi-toned kaleidoscope across every face. When the light hits the grain of the exotic woods just right, it creates an optical depth that mimics the luminescence of actual glass. Resting together inside their secure Reliquary the finished effect is unmistakable: a legendary tribute to dark ages European architecture, reimagined for the modern adventurer.
These dice are massive. As you can see in the photo below, we’ve placed a standard sized d20 for scale. (Standard sized d20 NOT included with purchase)
